A LITTLE TEST OF SPEED

Spacebar counter.

One key. Your own pace. See how many presses you can fit into a few seconds.

Ready when you are. The first press starts the clock.

Spacebar mode counts physical Space presses while the large key has focus. Holding the key counts once. A physical keyboard is required.

SMALL DETAILS, FAIRER RESULTS

How to use the spacebar counter

Choose 5, 10, 30 or 60 seconds, then focus the key.

Click or Tab to the large key, then press Space. The first accepted press starts the timer. Your rate is the number of presses divided by the full test length. In Free count, the rate uses elapsed time.

A held key is one press.

Operating systems repeat keys when you hold them down. This counter ignores those repeats and waits for you to release Space. Clicks on the large key only count in Tap / click mode, which keeps its own result history.

Compare like with like.

Use the same duration, device and input mode when comparing rounds. Leaving the page, switching tabs or moving focus away from the key cancels an active test. This is a personal practice tool; it does not certify scores or detect every kind of automation.

Using a phone?

Connect a physical keyboard for a spacebar test, or choose Tap / click for a touchscreen test. Touch results measure tapping and are kept separate from spacebar results.

READ THE NUMBER, NOT THE HYPE

What your PPS actually means

Guide updated 29 October 2026.

The formula uses the full test length.

In a timed round the counter divides total presses by the length you chose. It does not divide by the time until your last press. So 50 presses in 10 seconds is 5.00 PPS, and 250 presses in 60 seconds rounds to 4.17 PPS because 250 ÷ 60 = 4.166… The 5-second and 60-second results are not interchangeable: a short test gives less time to slow down, while a long test includes more chances to fade.

50 presses ÷ 10 seconds = 5.00 PPS

A three-round comparison on one device

Warm up first, then keep the same device, duration and input mode. The table below is an illustrative worked example, not a recorded player result.

RoundInputLengthPressesPPS
1Spacebar10s444.40
2Spacebar10s474.70
3Spacebar10s464.60

The median is the middle value after sorting: 4.40, 4.60, 4.70, so the comparison value is 4.60 PPS. A median is less sensitive than your single best round. Do not add a 5-second or Tap / click row to this comparison; the history labels those separately for the same reason.

Where the displayed numbers come from

The live rate during a round divides presses by elapsed time. The finished result and the saved history row divide presses by the full chosen length. Both display two decimals. The local history stores count, duration and input mode separately, so a Tap / click round is labelled rather than mixed with Spacebar rounds. Free count uses elapsed time and is not saved as a completed timed round.

Why a round can cancel

The counter cancels an active round when the large key loses focus, the browser window loses focus, or the tab becomes hidden. The status line says the round was cancelled and no result was saved. Clicking another control, switching tabs or leaving the page can all move focus away. Return to the large key and start again.

If the count will not rise while you hold Space

That is expected. Keyboard auto-repeat is ignored, and the counter waits for a release before accepting the next press, so a long hold counts once. If separate presses are still missed, confirm Spacebar mode is selected rather than Tap / click, click the large key once to focus it, and avoid modifier combinations such as Ctrl or Alt with Space, which the handler ignores.

A SHORT, REPEATABLE SET

A short practice plan

Use a few short rounds, not one long grind.

A practical session: three 5-second rounds to warm up with rests between them, then three 10-second rounds as your measured set, then optionally one 30-second round. Compare the median of the three 10-second rounds, not the single best. Keep the same keyboard and input mode. Stop if your hand or wrist feels uncomfortable.

Change one variable at a time.

Change only the duration, the input mode or your seating position between comparisons. If you switch from Spacebar to Tap / click, treat it as a different test. If you move to another device, start a new comparison rather than mixing the rows.

Spacebar test questions

Which test lengths can I choose?

Choose 5, 10, 30 or 60 seconds before starting. Free count has no fixed finish time. Click or Tab to the large key; the first accepted press starts the count.

Does holding Space count as many presses?

No. Keyboard mode ignores held-key repeats and waits for you to release Space before counting the next press. Moving focus away from the key or switching tabs cancels an active round.

Can I use a spacebar counter on a phone?

Use a physical keyboard for the spacebar test. Tap / click is a separate input mode for touchscreen or mouse-button activations; its results are not the same as physical spacebar speed.

Are these world-record or certified scores?

No. This is a personal practice counter. Up to 12 completed rounds stay in this browser, with duration and input mode recorded separately. The site has no global leaderboard and does not certify physical input or detect all automation.

How is presses per second calculated?

In a timed round, presses divided by the full test length. 50 presses in 10 seconds is 5.00 PPS; 250 in 60 seconds is 4.17 PPS. Free count uses elapsed time. A 5-second and a 60-second result are not directly comparable.

Why did my round disappear?

Moving focus away from the large key, clicking another control, switching tabs or leaving the page cancels the active round without saving it. Holding Space counts once, so release between presses. Choose the same duration, device and input mode when comparing.
